Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement & Part D Insurance

Understanding the Basics of Medicare

Medicare is the federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. Certain younger individuals with disabilities and people with specific medical conditions may also qualify.

Original Medicare consists of two primary parts:

Medicare Part A:

Hospital insurance that helps pay for inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services.

Medicare Part B

Medical insurance that helps pay for outpatient tests, doctor visits, some durable medical equipment, and preventive services.

Beyond Original Medicare, you may have additional options for obtaining or supplementing your healthcare coverage.

Why Consider Medicare Supplement Coverage?

People may consider Medigap coverage because they want additional help with costs not fully covered by Original Medicare and greater predictability when planning healthcare expenses.

Different standardized Medigap plans provide different levels of coverage, so understanding what each option includes is important before making a decision.

We Can Help You Consider:

  • Your doctors and preferred healthcare providers
  • Prescription medications
  • Plan premiums and potential out-of-pocket costs
  • Provider networks
  • Additional plan benefits
  • Your anticipated healthcare needs

Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage: Understanding Your Options

Medicare Supplement Insurance, commonly known as Medigap, is private insurance designed to work alongside Original Medicare. Depending on the plan you choose, Medigap can help cover some of the healthcare costs Original Medicare does not fully pay, including copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Frequently Asked Questions About Medicare

For many people, the best opportunity to purchase Medicare Supplement Insurance is during their six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period.

This period generally begins the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this enrollment period, federal protections provide important rights when purchasing a Medigap policy.

Enrollment rules can vary depending on your circumstances, which is one reason it can be helpful to review your options before making a coverage decision.

Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through a private Medicare approved insurance company. Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, works with Original Medicare to help cover certain out of pocket costs that Original Medicare does not pay. You cannot use a Medigap policy to cover Medicare Advantage plan expenses.

Your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period generally lasts seven months, beginning three months before the month you turn 65 and ending three months afterward. Starting your research before you become eligible can give you more time to understand your options.

No. Medicare Supplement coverage is designed to work with Original Medicare, not Medicare Advantage. You cannot use a Medigap policy to pay Medicare Advantage deductibles, copayments, premiums, or other plan expenses.

Medigap policies sold after 2005 do not include prescription drug coverage. Someone with Original Medicare and Medigap who wants prescription coverage can generally enroll in a separate Medicare Part D plan.
